Trikala Attractions - Matsopoulos Mill and "The Mill of the Elves"

In the heart of Greece, within an impressive stretch, you can find a village of this seet bearded man, who comes on Christmas and fulfills all of our childish wishes. Every year in the most favorite festive period of kids and grown-ups, the town adopts a new fairy tale and decorated in every corner welcomes thousands of visitors form every part of the country and the world in the wonderful and famous “Mill of Elves”, the largest Christmas thematic park in Greece. Children and adults of all ages participate in various activities and events for 40 days of endless fun! Well have you been naughty or nice this year?The Matsopoulos Mill was the first industrial investment in Trikala, while today represents the cultural “lung” of our town. Any person you may ask, they will suggest you to visit one of the most vivid places in the town! This is a building complex of 3.500 sqm, a landmark for the area that hosts the popular Christmas park, the Mill of Elves!This pioneering industrial building for its time was constructed in 1884 and played a crucial role for the general development of the city in the difficult years after liberation. Until its closure in the 1980s, it maintained its structure almost unchanged and the mechanical equipment is now almost intact. The building complex has been characterized as a historical monument because of its remarkable example of industrial architecture that time in Greece.In 1997 has been bequeathed to the Municipality of Trikala by I. Matsopoulos, a benefactor of the town and today is a historical-industrial park and cultural center. In the Mill you will find, among other, a summer and winter cinema, a theater, a cafe-bar and playgrounds for children!But not only this! After 135 years from its restoration the mill was introduced as an Industrial Museum of Trikala. The space is a unique museum open to the public, the only one in Greece and one of the few in Europe that was operating as flour mills. The innovation lies in the fact that the facility can operate as an actual mill, which means that can produce every type of flour. Moreover, the building houses the Museum of Agriculture too.
